Abstract

Home-based medical care (HBMC) aims to meet the complex medical and functional needs of the homebound elderly with multimorbidity andmobility impairment by providing comprehensive and longitudinal primary care. Unlike South Korea where home visit service by a physician hascompletely vanished since the late 1990s, the HBMC in the U.S. has continued to expand and evolve as a new demand for HBMC has increased overthe years. The favorable clinical and functional impact and cost-saving effect of the home visit service have been attributed to the resurgence ofHBMC in the U.S. The article describes the crucial components of HBMC and driving forces for its growth in the U.S., and these qualities may need tobe incorporated into newly implemented HBMC initiatives in South Korea.
